She send $4.00 for four copies of the "Star of Araly". She thanks him for sending to her society, The Edwin Markham Poetry Soicety. He sent her seven copies and she says that she will have no problem disposing of them. She also will be sending the rest of the balance soon. Then she sends her regards to his father. Muir, and Joaquin Miller. Also her daughter send her regards to Mr. and Mrs. Markham. Then she askes if Virgil could please return the poems from the last Montalve contest.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
